Our Pharmacists Tips

  • Increlex (mecasermin) has a similar effect to insulin where it can lower your child’s blood sugar. Because of this, your child needs to eat within 20 minutes of the injection (either before or after) so their blood sugar won’t drop too low.

  • Ask your child’s provider to instruct you on what to do in case your child’s blood sugar drops too low. Make sure you and your child can recognize symptoms of low blood sugar, including dizziness, feeling anxious, or feeling irritable. Have your child carries some kind of fast-acting sugar, such as glucose gel, hard candy, or juice with sugar in it, with them at all times. Call 911 if your child passes out from low blood sugar.

  • Skip the dose Increlex (mecasermin) if you know your child won’t be able to eat either 20 minutes before or after a meal or a snack. If you give the dose of Increlex (mecasermin) and your child doesn’t eat within 20 minutes, monitor them for symptoms of low blood sugar, such as feeling faint, shaking, and sweating, and treat your child’s low blood sugar right away. If their symptoms don’t improve, call 911.

  • Read the instructions on how to inject Increlex (mecasermin) below or watch the instructional video. Before starting this Increlex (mecasermin), make sure your child’s provider or pharmacist teaches you how to give your child the injection so that you avoid accidentally hurting yourself, your child, or wasting the medication.

  • Increlex (mecasermin) is supplied as vials containing 40 mg of the medication. These vials are multiple-dose vials, meaning you can use the same vial to draw up multiple doses until the vial runs out of medication or if it’s been open for 30 days. Throw away the vial after 30 days, even if there’s still medication inside the vial.

  • Store new, unopened vials of Increlex (mecasermin) in the refrigerator away from light. After opening the vial for the first time, you may store it in the refrigerator for up to 30 days.

  • Always check to make sure the medication is clear and colorless before using it. If it’s cloudy, discolored, or has particles (solid chunks), don’t use it. Contact your child’s provider or pharmacist to see if it’s possible to get a replacement.

  • Always use a new needle for each injection to help prevent infections and blocked needles. Don’t reuse or share needles with other people to avoid spreading infections.
